Micronutrient fortification
Micronutrients such as iron, vitamin A, calcium, iodine and zinc are essential for growth and development. Despite their vital role, over one-third of the world’s population, mainly in developing countries, suffer from micronutrient deficiencies.
Nestlé is therefore committed to helping reduce micronutrient deficiencies on a global scale.
Working with local governments and health authorities to identify widespread nutritional ‘gaps’ in diets, we focus on the fortification of popular foods to help prevent micronutrient deficiencies.
In Sri Lanka, iron, vitamin A and calcium are prevailing micronutrient deficiencies. *34% of Sri Lankan children between six months and five years are deficient in iron, while **29% and *48% of children in the same age group are deficient in vitamin A and calcium respectively. Therefore we are fortifying our products that are widely and regularly consumed, with iron, vitamin A and calcium.
In 2018, we provided 910 million servings of micronutrient fortified Nestlé products to consumers.
